Studio research for riso project

I revisited an online course I took in drawing portraits and was reminded by how taken I am with portraits done in biro; black ballpoint pen. So I attempted a couple of plain paper. Not particularly successful but there’s still a quality that I’m drawn to. Could potentially work better on a mid-tone paper so not so much mark making required and use a lighter tone in another pen??

Reflections: too busy, need to simplify a LOT, too many colours competing in some compositions, how can I work in layers?

This act of drawing in the figure in pen raised the idea of introducing a sheet of transparency within the book and printing only the figure/shapes in dark purple. Would this be possible?? This would emphasise the concept of fleeting moments within the eternal Territory landscape.

A recent Domestika online course I took on experiemental portraiture encouraged the use of spraypaint so I bought cans in orange, pink and teal. Interested to see how this might influence my paintings. The above charcoal drawings are on blue pre-primed paper that I thought I would just draw on with charcoal and pastel but felt like it needed paint. Spraypaint experiments with scratching and rubbing back into paint while still wet.

Below photos show one studio assistant while she’s on school holidays. Photos don’t show the mess she left me with 😅

Progress on this portrait of Art with kids; acrylic paint, A3 size roughly. Really enjoying the process of painting but not sure how this will translate to riso, or if fits with Territory kids. Current plan is to do three mums and kids paintings and three Territory kids; may work in pairs; selfie vs kids focus; motherhood close to home.
