Concrete painting research

I’m a little nervous to go forward with experimenting with concrete, as there’s so many unknowns; will it stay adhered to the board or canvas, will it crack, will it be easy to draw/paint over? So I’ve been watching and rewatching any videos that show artist’s in process including this one of Emmanuel Osahor, a Nigerian artist that experimented with transferring paintings onto concrete: first painting with oils onto glass then pouring concrete over the top.

Emmanuel Osahor, Untitled, Concrete, Styrofoam, Oil Paint and Ceramic Tiles, 16.25 x 13 inches.

Emmanuel Osahor, Untitled, Oil on concrete and styrofoam, 6.18 x 8.18 inches.

This video of Sophie Green painting with concrete was the first I watched and I’ve come back to it as she is a compelling artist and has different techniques, using board with wood glue and a plastic screen (like reo) on the surface before starting to layer on the concrete.

Sophia Green, Modern Love, 2016 Concrete, oil and acrylic paint on wood 38 x 48 inches (965 x 1219 mm).
