Absolute silence

CDU

Selele means absolute silence in the language of the Gbaya people of the western region of Central African Republic.

Aims were to use curved regular line, organic/circular shapes, a consonant composition and look at how symmetrical elements could be used to give it a harmonious and balanced feel.

In this initial sketch use of curved line and dark background invoked a planetary, deep space feel.

Two refinements at 10x10cm

The first refinement closely ressembled the thumbnail. For the second I used tracing paper and looked at grid structure as was suggested and found rotating the composition gave it a weight that I felt absolute silence would carry (ominous) while also being peaceful.

Weaving the lines also gave added depth and solidity to the composition. I look forward to seeing how this translates digitally with more consistent lines and a gradient.

Rages out-of-doors

Aims for this was for the line to be heavy dark and irregular, plane tectonic with multiple points. Emphasis dissonant, and unity off-centre with a disrupted flow.

Reads left to right with an explosion of rage slamming into the ceiling and gets messy before resuming the previous line/path.

Two refinements at 10x10cm

Rather than copy what I’d done in the thumbnail I drew the line again, in a quick motion gripping pencil in my fist and pressing hard on paper. In the first refinement I used ruled line for path but didn’t feel it was successful.

I feel bottom refinement to be most successful but does it need added dimension/layering?

I would like to attempt in ink and allow line to smudge however not sure how that would translate digitally.
