Cyclone Series

The recent cyclone that hit Queensland bought a variety of emotions with it (even though it made landfall far from us) and I was keen to try and channel some of that energy into a little series of works on paper all inspired by the copy of a weather map I rediscovered amongst my studio things.

Initially I took inspiration from the lines, the isobars, and shapes created. Almost immediately I saw it as a collage project and began the process of selecting from my collection of pre-painted paper that many had been done with my girls.

I was loving the combo of collage cuttings from charcoal drawings along with the abstract watercolour play… so interesting to try all different kinds of layouts, and great practice on trusting my artistic intuition on what is right before glueing down. I then started to bring in some charcoal, pencil, and acrylic markers to add depth and interest to the compositions.

Finding the paper that my 7yo had painted with neon paints was SO FUN. I loved added in the bright colour pops. I was using the colour wheel initially to think about the colour combinations; analogous, complimentary, split complimentary, etc. but soon found that I much preferred to again let my intuition lead the way.

Stay tuned for Part 2: loose play into the final compositions. And let me know what you think so far!
