Pondering what's to come
Time has quickly passed here as a family roadtrip, Christmas, an aborted trip deep south, a decision to move into our Yeppoon house for the start of the school year for my daughter, and the resulting moving activity… have bought me to a very different place. The emotional and physical landscape are very different to what they were at the conclusion of my second semester of 2022.
Yet I am still drawn to a concept that began to gel for me last year, that of working with children to produce work in collaboration. I’ve already been doing this is a sense with my work around motherhood which has often included drawings by my now 6yo daughter Eleven, or been inspired by, or directly referenced her work.
The exhibitions at DVA late last year allowed me to see more clearly that what I love about showing work is the sense of discovery and resulting wonder that an artwork can evoke for the viewer. A 2D drawing or painting on a wall doesn’t have the same effect as a work that can be experienced from multiple angles and bring new discoveries. But also, my delight at sharing my work with others was magnified and expanded upon by the inclusion of my daughter’s artwork, and her own resulting delight.
Which brings me to a place where I am contemplating how to merge these revelations into a new research project and resulting body of work.
