Intensive Drawing Class - Shadows

CDU

I was planning to have a break and actually start packing up our house ready for our big move from Darwin to Yeppoon (QLD) in late September / early October but I couldn’t resist continuing the momentum and squeezing in an intensive drawing class in the official semester break.

On mapping out my units I realised the big bonus is that by doing two of these I’ll be able to finish my degree at the end of 2023! IF I can stay on track this time of course 😏

Below is all the official unit information more for me to use to reference, skip past to get to the first week’s work in progress 👇🏼

We were asked to sketch shadows of household objects to create a sort of ‘Rayograph’ or photogram.

I managed to confuse myself and instead sketch shadows rather than the inversion for my first sketch.

Second drawing focusing on correct translation of the Rayograph concept and composition

I neglected to photograph the progression of my sketches above as requested - will make sure to do this for future works. The below show my progression through the task of taking the image into Adobe Illustrator. Note my experimentation with different compositions to refine and simplify.

Saturday 2nd July - Research: As I have an interest in portraiture I did a little research on portrait charcoal drawing and came across this artist YouTube channel Mad Charcoal - so many great techniques. I especially love the shorts which very quickly show how he achieves different results - can also find him on TikTok @mad.charcoal

Sunday 3rd July - finalised composition after more experimentation as seen in last 5 images in gallery above; kept it simple; reversed image as required in workbook.

I think it’s a static, well balanced, harmonious composition that has a wide tonal range and successfully fulfils the brief. I don’t believe it worthy of further development however.
