Artist Model: Carola Kastman

I came across Carola a few weeks ago and she’s stood out as an artist who brands herself remarkably well on social media, i.e. all material she posts fits with the tonality and feel of her artworks. Even her videos are edited to feel dreamlike with a glitchy type lag. She always has her hair screening her face so that our gaze is directed to either what she is creating or what she is recording as inspiration.

Her works are monochromatic graphite and ink abstract sketches with layers of paint to create texture. She often arranges her works in grids and she plays with this in her Instagram posts, arranging images and videos in grids of 4 within the larger grid.

I believe she sees everything she posts as an extension of her art. Life as art. Life is art.

I love this bio taken from her representative gallery Galleri Helle Knudsen:

“Carola Kastman was born in 1968 in Ulricehamn. Lives and works in Stockholm. Aesthetically, Carola is attracted to color scales in black, gray and brown. She likes the dirty, not quite perfect.

The Swedish melancholy exists as a veil over the paintings and her brushstrokes follow the Scandinavian seasons.”
